Nature of the Work
Reporting to the Director of Technical Operations, the primary responsibility of the Data Manager is to maintain the repository of bone and joint health data administered by the Institute. This includes:

  • maintaining the health of the organization’s Microsoft SQL Server environment,
  • developing and maintaining data ETL processes, including migrating and integrating data from multiple sources (e.g. Oracle, SQL Server, Microsoft Access, CSV),
  • cleaning and linking data from various application and technology platforms,
  • supporting data analysis and reporting applications and tools,
  • overseeing the security and protection of highly confidential health data, including monitoring for security breaches and participating in security audits,
  • support and enhance the organization’s data cube and data warehouse using Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services and Microsoft Visual Studio,
  • supporting legacy data analysis and reporting applications and utilities, and
  • enhancing the functionality and capabilities of the data repository to meet the organization’s objectives.

Software used includes Microsoft SQL Server 2016, SQL Server Reporting Services, SQL Server Analysis Services, SQL Server Integration Services, Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Excel, custom built ASP.NET websites, Microsoft Power BI, and related tools.

The incumbent requires excellent communication skills to facilitate cooperation with all partner organizations that supply data, and to ensure that the data is accessible to and usable by the analytics team.

Occasional travel within Alberta may be required.


  • Excellent SQL query writing skills, preferably with Transact SQL (T-SQL)
  • Experience developing database architecture for complex applications
  • Five or more years of database administrator experience, including:
    • Securing databases using role and application permissions
    • Managing backups and disaster recovery strategies
    • Maintaining the health of large production Microsoft SQL Server data repositories
  • A solid understanding and experience using SQL Server Reporting Services, Integration
    Services and Analysis Services
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Experience building and working with large data warehouses and/or data cubes using SQL
    Server Analysis Services
  • Experience building ETL processing using SQL Server Integration Services
  • Experience building and/or maintaining B2B data interchange and cross-platform data transformations
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-stakeholder team environment under
    minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate with internal and external stakeholders and represent the
    organization’s data infrastructure needs professionally in a way that fosters confidence with partner

Other experience that would be an asset:

  • Microsoft Access development
  • Oracle PL/SQL
  • Development of web applications on a LAMP stack
  • Basic network administration and IT support experience
    • Managing user accounts and network security
    • VPN support
    • Software troubleshooting
    • Printer troubleshooting
  • Familiarity with health data, including administrative, clinical, and electronic medical
  • Experience working with highly sensitive data (e.g. health data, financial data) or working
    with data subject to stringent privacy legislation (e.g. HIA, HIPAA, Privacy Act, PIPEDA)
